The Shop Assistant Program (SAPlings)
* SAPlings is on pause for the Fall 2022 Semester * Stay tuned for updates!
SAplings is a unique initiative for Fine Arts students where students volunteer two hours a week with our virtual teams in exchange for skill training out of the CTC (Core Technical Centre) shops. SAPlings have hosted virtual exhibitions, vernissages, collage nights, game nights and more. This program works on the basis of equitable exchange, and is flexible, adapting to the ideas of each semester's student makeup!
The Shop Assistant Program (SAPling initiative) began in 2018 as a way to allow for more access to the shops while simultaneously assisting shop work flow and increasing the overall user knowledge of tools and shop skills. During the pandemic with shops open in a hybrid capacity, SAPling two hour shifts were done online in small teams that each SAPling has chosen to work with. These teams work on initiatives to increase opportunities for skill sharing, exhibiting and also start to address issues around ease of access and other anxieties students have by creating opportunities to meet in small more intimate group settings online.
The only requirement is that you are a Fine Arts student, no previous experience is needed. Since this program is for people who want to learn how to use tools and also for people who already have tool and machine knowledge, applicants are taken in on a first come first serve basis.

SAPlings virtual sister program (PIXLS 2020/21)
During the Pandemic the SAPlings program which had only functioned on campus and in the CTC shops was not possible. We took on a new name for our completely virtual year: the PIXLS (Peer Interface eXchange Learning for Students) and ran several successful virtual events, skill shares, gatherings and even a virtual exhibition titled Home Made! With the hybrid return to the EV building and CTC shops the original SAPlings program and the PIXLS virtual program will join together offering opportunities to experience the best of both programs!
See the virtual gallery which the PIXLS conceptualized, designed and curated by clicking the link below. If you join the SAPlings this term the Gallery team will run again, and you can be part of our next exhibition!
